From the first imports of sugar and cocoa, to Fry’s producing the first ever chocolate bar, Bristol’s history is intertwined with the sweet stuff.

Join us for a super tasty walking tour through the Old Town, sampling 8 delicious treats along the way. The perfect historic walking tour for those with a sweet tooth!

Your yummy Bristol Old Town walking tour begins at the bottom of Christmas Steps — a street as pretty as its name. Your local guide will describe how chocolate making developed in the city, from medieval monks to the invention of the world’s first ever chocolate bar and chocolate Easter Egg! Your fascinating route spans hidden rivers, crosses medieval city walls, and passes buildings which date back to the origins of the city. You’ll even visit contemporary chocolate makers to hear from the experts about how the magic is done!

You’ll gently wander towards the old town, passing 300-year-old sugar houses, medieval streets, and the 18th century financial district whilst stopping to nibble on chocolaty delights along the way!

A true highlight of the tour is our stop at Ruby Hue, Bristol’s only bean-to-bar chocolate maker to see chocolate making in action and taste their beautiful creations! Your chocolate tour then finishes amongst the wonderful independent traders of St. Nicholas Market, where you can then spend the rest of the day exploring the market stalls and food traders in your own time!

A street as pretty as its name. Christmas steps is packed full of fascinating shops and boutiques and is the best preserved part of medieval Bristol - the perfect start to our tasty walking tour!

Bristol's only surviving Sugar House

Now a posh hotel, this 17th century building once processed "white gold", as sugar was known back then. Luckily, the hotel owners don't mind us taking a quick peek inside. Whilst there you'll sample sugar cane and discover how this delicious natural treat was processed into a key ingredient for chocolate!

Gateway to the Old Town

We then pause beneath St. John's gate. Bristol's the only surviving Medieval gateway. You'll then nibble some ancient treats before exploring the delights of the Old Town on your fascinating walking tour!

Guibert's Chocolates have been making delicious chocs in Bristol since 1910. We sample a selection on Small Street where they are still made today! Your local guide will then lead you into the heart of Bristol's Old Town.

A must see sight in Bristol and the heart of Bristol's Old Town. We pause our walking tour in front of the Corn Exchange to talk about Bristol's trading past and how sugar and Cocoa arrived from the Carribean. Ruby Hue are Bristol's only bean to bar chocolate maker and their magical chocolates have an amazing story to tell. You'll hear how the process works from true experts who share their passion and their chocolates with pure joy!

St. Nicholas Market!

The final stop on Bristol's yummiest Walking tour is Treasure Island Sweets! Hidden within St. Nicholas market this timecapsule of Vicotorian delights is full of sweets with names you've forgotten existed. We finish here with WW2 ration chocolate whilst talking about the Bristol Blitz before you spend the afternoon exploring the market and maybe visiting the WW2 air raid shelter beneath the street!

Duncan McKellar is the founder of our air raid shelter tours and museum space. Duncan has battled hard for 6 years to preserve and open the space to the public. His perseverance has paid off and now Bristol has another world class heritage attraction for all to enjoy!

Owen is a trained Actor with a passion for history! Owen has been head warden at our air raid shelter for two years and is a weath of knowledge for all things WW2.

Theresa Roche

Air Raid Shelter guide

Theresa has many years experience guiding in both Bristol and Bath. She is a trained actor with a history degree and particular interest in WW2 and the French Resistance. She has performed on stage and T.V and currently teaches Georgian dance classes!
